John M. Blessing, Sr., 88, of Shermans Dale, PA, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on November 19, 1931, son of the late Martha (Hatfield) and George B. Blessing.
He graduated from John Harris High School. John was a Patriot who served his country in the U.S. Army as a Sgt. in the Korean War and was a member of New Bloomfield VFW Post 7463. He retired after 30+ years from the former Bell Telephone Company. He and Val attended Snyder’s United Methodist Church, New Bloomfield. Together, they enjoyed traveling in their RV around the country; he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
John was the widower of M. Joanne Blessing (1991) and is survived by his wife of 13 years, Val Jean Blessing. He is also survived by two sons and a stepdaughter: John M. Blessing, Jr. (wife SaraLynn) of Harrisburg; Kenneth C. Blessing (wife Tami) of Denver, PA; and Randi Herrity (husband Joe) of Trenton, NJ; five grandchildren: Jamie Housley, Emily Nailor, Krysti Gundrum, Matt Blessing, and Lauri Engle; seven great grandchildren; and a sister, Maryellen Wolf (husband Karl) of MN. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, George Blessing, and his sister, Doris Jean Blessing.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2020, at Boyer Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Inc., in New Bloomfield. Reverend William Pipp will officiate. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial, with full Military Honors, will be held in Mount Gilead United Methodist Cemetery, Shermans Dale.
Covid 19 protocols, masks, and social distancing will be observed.
